Who am I?

About Me. BACPaccreditationI have over 35 years' experience of relationship including corporate, caring and helping professions and I have extensive knowledge of people. I firmly believe that 'people buy people'.

My work in mental health started with conditions like chronic depression, anxiety and anger. I then realised my true passion was in looking at the underlying cause of these symptoms and I started to see this was relationship, and trauma, and the relationship that was formed between the person and the external world.

Curious Kate....why is it that some people thrive with inner resilience, determination and grit and others suffer with anxiety, depression and isolation?  Is it really just about survival and attachment?  We are learning so much more about neuroscience and the link between genes, nature and nurture.  The individuality, and complexity, of humans really amazes me! Are we not all conditioned and a product of our environment, of those younger years, which are still informing us today? (Btw, if you are reading this, you are likely to be a thriver rather than survivor as you want change).

For my own self-care, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, walking, gardening and eating ice-cream!

My Own Counselling Journey

Not surprisingly, having scored high on my own 'ACEs test', I had been to counselling along my own life path and so I have been where you are now. Also, as part of my degree, I went back into counselling for an additional 60 hours where I learnt more about how I ticked as a human.  Additionally, I  have experience of being in groups (some re-traumatising and some healing).

My philosophy truly is 'be the change you wish to see in the world' (Gandhi).  I firmly believe, with the right conditions, we all can grow and live a fulfilling contented life.

Today I still attend counselling, as required, as this helps me counsel clients with minimal impact of my own life experience.

How I Work

About Me. chance
My style of counselling - Relational Integrative Counselling

I trained as an relational integrative counsellor as I love relationship.  This modality offers varying counselling approaches so I can tailor therapy to suit you; the individual, couple or two. This approach works well as we are all unique and special and therefore not a 'one size fits all'.

I very much see my role as listening, reflecting, championing, supporting, tentatively challenging and offering insight using my experience , wisdom and training whilst sitting alongside you as a fellow fallible human being.  I do not give advice or tell you what to do.

Freud suggested that counsellors should be 'blank screens' offering nothing yet I will, if appropriate, self-disclose in the interests of a client.

Ultimately, the success and effectiveness of your counselling is dependent on how open, honest and willing you are to look at aspects of your own life and how you implement what you learn in our sessions into your daily life.

Professional experience

I set up private practice in 2014.

Alongside my private work I had the privilege of working as a volunteer counsellor at Sam Beare Hospice in Weybridge where I counselled family members experiencing loss and I gained experience working at RASASC (Rape And Sexual Abuse Support Centre) in Guildford.

I have a current DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) which enables me to work with vulnerable adults.
